Ann begins a new chapter in her life in September 1956, moving from rural Pen Llŷn to begin a college course in Bangor. She finds comfortable lodgings in Rhes Brynhyfryd, Upper Bangor - but she soon feels that there is something unusual about her landlady, Mrs Powell.
